The Rise of Indie Games: Opportunities for Game Designers

Game Design has been on the rise in recent years. Since video games burst onto the scene in the 1980s, they have been a staple of the entertainment world. However, gaming and its variables have reached unprecedented heights in the modern era. Gaming is an entire industry in itself, one that feeds many mouths around the world.

From developers to technicians to designers to streamers, a single videogame can create multiple modes of income for people. Moreover, these are highly lucrative modes of income. Therefore, as one thing leads to another, the gaming scene birthed many more of its kind in the industry. One of them is the birth and rise of ‘Indie Games’.

Indie Games stands for Independent Games. It is a video game created by individuals or a smaller group of people without the help of a large game publisher. In contrast to AAA games, indie games are often lacking in the technical or financial support that they need in development.

That’s because the manpower required to build them isn’t enough, or the scope and scale of the video game isn’t enough. Traditionally, developing, designing, and launching a fully-operational indie video game has been very difficult due to the aforementioned reasons. But things have changed now.

The significant growth in the gaming industry provided a much-needed jolt to indie games as well. Now, indie games and gamers are also on the rise. The rise of indie games opened up a new frontier of opportunities for game designers.

It is unmistakable that game design and designers have been flourishing for quite some time now. There are design colleges with courses in game design opening up at a much more frequent rate. While game design has been on the rise for quite some time now, indie game design provides its unique set of advantages to designers. Hence, automatically, the opportunities also increase.

Indie games are all about designing them in the comfort of a small group of team of people. Mostly, they are like-minded and share a similar passion for their work. This allows them an increased space or freedom to experiment with their work.

There is more freedom to be creative and express their imagination without much fear of pushback. The rigidity and the limitations are less, as compared to designing an AAA game for a major corporation. This is always a strong positive for anyone wishing to pursue game design.

An opportunity to express freely is an advantage beyond measure. Hence, the demand is high to be an indie game designer, and so are the opportunities.

Take the Sandbox game in Minecraft, where players are allowed to build, explore, and create virtually anything in a wide-open world without any set pattern or storyline.

While the scope in indie game design has always remained a bit low, things have taken a turn for the positive in recent times. This opened up many previously closed doors for indie game design.

The creativity, freedom, and other aspects were always there in indie game design, but the overall income or profit was low. Now, with things having improved, the disadvantages have lessened, and the advantages look much more lucrative.

With a huge demand for indie games and a market to fill, developing, designing, and launching an indie game almost assures a higher revenue split today. The bonus would be the added individual recognition they get for their innovative ideas.

Game designers always come up with sharp and innovative ideas, but the world of big corporations doesn’t allow much wiggle room to improvise. They mostly adhere to a script, stick to their job, follow rigid guidelines, and if any innovation does strike them, they usually have to run it by a series of approvals. The payment at the end of the month was a very healthy one, though.

While designing indie games, the field of innovation widens. So, automatically, constant experimentation with newer ideas gives rise to brighter ideas. The brighter idea, when implemented flawlessly into a video game, is likely to yield a better round of appreciation.

Therefore, the recognition is more for it. Simultaneously, it also provides a great opportunity for younger designers to learn more and learn quickly. Even when the pay wasn’t so great, it was still a wise idea to work as an indie game designer, since they could learn a lot in less time and climb up the corporate ladder.

They could reap their rewards later on in their career, once their foundation was strong. Now, even that minor inconvenience of a lower revenue split is eradicated.

With all of these advantages, led heavily by the creative freedom, younger design aspirants among the Gen Z people find indie game design a more appealing career option. An additional advantage, not lost on the newer generation, is the community building.

Designers at indie games get a better chance of building a community. The fact that it is a small group of individuals working together allows for better bonding between employees. The brainstorming of ideas is vigorous, and it automatically creates a better mode of communication between a host of like-minded, passion-fueled individuals. This quality of community building is a highly prized one among the newer generation of people.

In this process of providing a unique storyline, they also provide a unique experience to players. This builds a fanbase, a loyal and strong one. Once a loyal fanbase is built, the gaming company or the video game itself need not worry about sales and support staff much after that.

It soon becomes a well-oiled machine. Full disclaimer that there are exceptions, but the ones that stick the landing usually find a bright and successful future.

Technology and Artificial Intelligence are other factors in indie game design. Just like every other aspect of life has been impacted by modern technological trends and AI, indie games, too, are part of it. Owing to advanced technology and engines, the proverbial ‘pushing the envelope’ by indie game designers has been off the charts.

Consider the video game ‘Sumer’, for example. In it, players can get a board game-like experience combined with real-time elements and Helix Jump. The board game-like mechanics and the real-time gameplay creates a uniquely challenging experience, but a rewarding one for players.

And finally, indie game designers often run out of capital to design a game. What comes as a relief to them is crowdfunding and donation.

Platforms such as Kickstarter, Patreon, and other indie funding mechanisms provide opportunities for developers to raise capital and connect directly with their audience. Indie games have opened up multiple new markets, avenues, and platforms for game developers and designers to sell and market their products.

Some famous examples of indie games throughout the years have been Among Us, Minecraft, Celeste, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, etc. With myriad benefits and an ever-increasing opportunity for indie designers today, there has been an influx of design students opting for indie game design.
