The Rise of Electric Two-Wheelers in India

As we reach the midpoint of 2025, India ushers in a new era of technological development in the transportation sector – Electric Two Wheelers. The idea of an electric two-wheeler was conceived a long time ago and has since been developed and refined in the years that followed. Electric vehicles, especially when it comes to scooters and motorbikes, have been a reality in India for quite some time now.

However, due to various logistical, cost, and manageability issues, it never quite looked to capture the market. Now, India is seeing a significant shift in that trend. Electric Two-Wheelers aren’t just a reality, but people are finding it more feasible to use. Several factors contribute to this rise in the use of electric two-wheelers, the least of which is not India’s improved financial conditions.

India has seen a marked rise in UNHWI (Ultra-Net High-Worth Individuals) and HNWI (High-Net-Worth Individuals) people in recent years. At the turn of the 21st century, India turned a new chapter too, and the nation started to see a financial boom that continues to this day.

This is also the reason behind India’s rapid growth in the Luxury Market. This change in the economy has made Indians more financially independent, enabling them to afford more electric two-wheelers. Electric two-wheelers, for all their features, design, and other advantages, are usually quite expensive.

Therefore, it would’ve been difficult for its sales to rise in a nation that’s more dependent on more affordable fuel-driven vehicles, despite its many attractive features. Thankfully, India has gone past that financial threshold, and even the middle class is affording electric vehicles.

Before getting to the affordability of the common folk, electric two-wheelers rose in sales mainly because there was a market demand for them. One of the main reasons behind their demand is the rapid urbanization and the rise in population. Cities and urban areas started to get extremely crowded, with vehicles thronging every nook and corner of the street.

This started to create a massive problem of air pollution. Cities such as New Delhi, Gurgaon, and Mumbai have seen the lowest levels of AQI (Air Quality Index) in recent times, and people are suffering from it. With that in mind, electric two-wheelers came as the obvious solution to the problem.

The automobile and transportation market began to shift more towards electric two-wheelers. As of 2021, sales of electric two-wheelers skyrocketed. It saw a 132% rise in the units sold as compared to its previous year.

In 2020, there were a total of 1,00,736 electric two-wheelers sold, and by 2021, the sales number increased to 2,33,971. This unprecedented rise amidst the COVID-19 pandemic was a clear indicator of India’s interest in its newest obsession – the Electric Two-Wheeler.

Everything started to shape up towards meeting this unprecedented demand for electric two-wheelers, not least of which was ‘Government Initiatives’. The FAME II scheme by the Indian government provides financial support to boost Electric Vehicle adoption. FAME II, which stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Phase II, is a government initiative specifically designed to boost electric mobility in India.

It has provided financial allocation for the support needed to adopt more electric two-wheelers and the development of charging infrastructure. Implemented on 1st April 2019, the scheme was launched with a budgetary allocation of INR 11,500 crores for five years.

These initiatives worked, also because of how electric vehicles struck a chord with the modern generation of people. Electric Two-Wheelers are an excellent way not only to mitigate pollution, but also to be environmentally friendly via sustainability. Since it doesn’t use any fuel, it essentially does not add to the depletion of any non-renewable resource.

It relies on electricity and can be charged at various charging points. Given the rising awareness towards pollution and climate change, a pressing issue that Gen Z and millennials take very seriously, they are naturally more inclined towards electric two-wheelers. They are actively pushing people towards eco-friendly transportation options.

Improvements on battery technology, smart features, implementation of AI, etc., are all making electric two-wheelers more efficient and appealing. The signs of the rise of electric two-wheelers are also visible from the expanding infrastructure for them. The number of charging stations is increasing gradually in India.

Some of the companies that have tasted success in the electric two-wheeler category are Hero Electric, Arthur Electric, Ola Electric, and Hop Electric. Hop Electric, in particular, is India’s leading two-wheeler electric vehicle and charging battery scooter company. Their electric bikes can reach up to a speed of 125 kmph. Founded by Ketan Mehta, Nikhil Bhatia, and Rahil Gupta in 2020, Hop Electric has seen a remarkable success story when it comes to electric vehicles.

It is a climate-tech startup that focuses only on the new energy automotive industry. Hop Electric has a wide range of electric mobility options with different targeted segments. Hop OXO, Hop Leo, and Hop Life are just some of the examples in that regard.

There is a moral responsibility that Hop Electric operates under, one that shapes their ethos, culture, and company principles. Hop Electric believes that they are the first generation of the human race to effectively feel the climate change and the last generation to take some action regarding it. Hop Electric is committed to accelerating the advent of a sustainable future by delivering products, technologies, and solutions that redefine the everyday commute for millions.

At the moment, the electric two-wheelers are dominating the electric vehicle market in India, and they account for a significant portion of the overall sales of EVs in India. The sales of the EV two-wheelers have shown a steady growth pattern every year, and future predictions suggest that it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
