Why Remote & Hybrid Design Roles Are Surging in India?

Ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has not remained the same. The global change that resulted from this outbreak was irrevocable. But it wasn’t apparent in many instances, such as the global job market. People had initially assumed that the change forcefully brought about by the pandemic would be temporary in nature.

They thought things could go back to normal once the threat of the virus, i.e., coronavirus, was eradicated. But it didn’t quite pan out that way. Even though we have come back to normalcy as far as the medical and health side of things are concerned, with a lower morbidity and mortality rate, and far fewer infections, some of the lifestyle changes that were brought about in 2020 didn’t go back to how pre-pandemic in 2019.

Remote jobs became the norm during the Coronavirus pandemic. It was a mandate around the world for those who hadn’t lost their jobs during that crisis. It was a huge shift, since before that, going to the office for work was the core principle of most jobs.

Nobody could even conjure up any idea about asking for ‘Work from Home,’ or finding ways to go to the office 2-3 days a week only. Working from the office has remained the mainstay for a very long time, before the COVID-19 pandemic changed that. Once people shifted to remote working conditions, it never fully shifted back. Here, we are going to look at why that was the case.

Not only do remote and hybrid jobs exist, but they are also surging in India. For the uninitiated, a hybrid job is when an employee divides his weekdays into those where he goes to the office and the rest where he works from home.

So, for example, an employee with a hybrid model will go to the office 2-3 days a week and work from home for the remaining two days. This is happening due to a fundamental shift in workplace culture.

Approximately 23% of white-collar job listings now offer flexible arrangements. Although companies may have resisted this outcome before, they are widely adopting it now to access a larger talent pool of employees beyond just the Tier I Indian cities.

This acts as a double advantage to them since they also save on real estate costs. Employees are the prime beneficiaries in this setup, since they get complete autonomy over their work. Not just that, but they also attain a much-improved work-life balance.

Not only do they not have to travel for work, but they also do not need to travel to any foreign city for work. They can remain in their hometown and keep working. All of this is, of course, supported by the robust digital infrastructure.

Let’s investigate the prime reasons why there has been a surge in the remote and hybrid design roles in India:

Remote and Hybrid Design Roles in India

1. Employee Demand and Retention

Surveys indicate high satisfaction rates (up to 98% among employees) with hybrid models. Flexible work hours, remote options, hybrid models, etc., are the primary strategies driving employee retention and attracting top design talent.

2. Access to Nimble Talent Pools

With remote job options, geography is no longer an obstacle. Design firms can now hire employees from Tier II and Tier III cities and not just rely upon Tier I cities. This way, they can tap into diverse skills without bearing the relocation costs.

3. Cost & Space Optimization

Since daily office occupancies are dropping, companies are reassessing their physical footprints to reduce overhead.

4. Infrastructure & Technology

Widespread high-speed Internet and advanced collaboration tools have made the management of design workflows a seamless maneuver. Cloud-based prototyping and digital feedback loops from anywhere.
