It was once a decorative art, meant to quench one’s creative zeal. Today, it’s a full-fledged profession with its demand rising by the day. Interior and Space Design have come a long way in recent years. The improved economy, advancement in technology, overpopulation, and sprawling urban centers have all shaped Interior Design and contributed to its rise. But what is Interior and Space Design and what does its future look like in the upcoming years?
Interior Design, as the name suggests, is the art and science of decorating a room’s interiors in alignment with the suitability of the residents. It could be an office space design that’s more effective and professional, or it could be one’s personal living space, which is more cozy and relaxed. Either way, it is important to establish a proper communication channel between the designer and the owners.
An Interior Designer works on a client’s requirements. They guide the client through a design development process, culminating in construction documents, the administration of a building contract, and ultimately completion of the project. It’s not only a decoration of the interior space, but also enhances the living conditions to a better standard.
Interior Design is not only an art but also a science of enhancing living arrangements. It makes the space more aesthetically pleasing, not only to the eyes but also to the people using the space. Their work encompasses everything from adjusting furniture, lighting, and fixtures to any other items that occupy space inside the living area.
With an improved economy, cities became more urbanized, which caused more people to travel and live there. This shift in society automatically demanded better living standards for such people. As people weren’t concerned about their earning potential, they shelled out more money to get their homes internally and spatially designed.
This was the birth of a trend that indicated the times to come. Interior Design holds a lot of potential, but what is more promising in the future is Space Design. It is a relatively new conceptual design that transcends traditional aspects of design, including architecture, landscape, urban design, and service design.
Space Design operates independently from interior design. It differs in that, it only works with two aspects: Negative Space and Positive Space. Positive Space includes all the tangible elements that form part of the design, whereas Negative Space refers to the space within it.
Space Design plays a major role in promoting the physical and mental well-being of an individual. Large rooms closely packed with furniture and other stuff create a cramped and hectic atmosphere. Arranging them aesthetically and pleasingly, while leaving large swaths of space for better movement, is a healthier outlook.
The proper movement of air inside the room, the entrance of sunlight, and water passages all contribute to a better, healthier environment. Moreover, leaving enough space to move around the room significantly decreases the risk of an accident or injury.
While modern-day real estate is increasingly focused on accommodating more people in a single building, it calls for an efficient solution. Space Design is the need of the hour. It doesn’t just remain a luxury service anymore, but is becoming an important and necessary feature.
Besides an improved lifestyle, the Interior and Space Design will also boost property values. A well-designed interior space in a room can significantly increase the value of the real estate property as compared to one that isn’t. It also includes renovations, refurbishments, and new constructions. It also improves functional spaces, optimizing them for maximum efficiency.
Some of the main factors that will influence Interior and Space Design in the coming years are – Sustainable and Green Design, Smart Homes and IoT Integration, Wellness and Healthy Spaces, and Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.
With increasing concerns about climate change, sustainable design is the way forward. Designs that incorporate greenery inside buildings, the use of less harmful paints with brighter, softer colors, and the proper utilization of water are key means of sustainable design as well as wellness spaces.
Smart homes and IoT (Internet of Things) incorporate the most advanced technologies such as device sensors and automation systems into the living arrangement. VR and AR technologies will also significantly improve the quality of life.
As various technological and societal changes shape the industry of Interior and Space Design, the demand for jobs in this field continues to rise. The Interior and Space Design course becomes a mainstay in design colleges and more students are encouraged to pursue it.
The Indian Interior Design market is expected to grow by 14.3% to reach $81.2 billion by 2030. Whereas, globally, the market is expected to reach $211.2 billion by 2032 at a 5.2% rate. The future in Interior and Space Design looks bright.
