Gaming Graphics Evolution in India: From Casual Apps to Competitive UX

Gaming began in India as simply and humbly as possible. It was either a pre-loaded gaming app on our phones, or if we go way further back to the days of the joystick, gaming cassette, and a setup in our television. Even computers were a luxury to most homes in the early 2000s, as they couldn’t afford them.

UX (User Experience) wasn’t really a thing before the entry of the graphics evolution and the technological advancements that penetrated into the gaming world. A good user experience relied entirely upon how satisfied you felt after playing that game, mostly with your joysticks, or even with your mobile switch buttons.

Now, obviously, the definition of UX design with regard to Gaming Graphics has taken on a new meaning. From pre-loaded apps on mobile phones, the Gaming Graphics has become about high-fidelity, competitive environments, NPCs (Non-Player Characters), and a whole different level of customization and personalization. Rapid technological adoption has been the primary reason behind it.

India, now, has one of the world’s largest gaming bases in the world. It has now surpassed 600 million gamers as of December 2025.

Let’s look at the Gaming Graphics Evolution in India according to each era.

The Era of Casual Simplicity (Late 1990s – 2010s)

In the early days of gaming in India, it was always a secondary accessory in our phones. Not a primary one. The early days of gaming were defined by hardware limitations, long and winding setups, time-consuming features, and very average graphics. These are some of the features that defined that era:

1. Minimalist Graphics

Early experiences of gaming centered a lot around monochromatic, pixel-based titles. Snake and Tetris on the old Nokia devices are a prime example of that.

2. Static UI

Interfaces, back in the day, were purely functional. They show essential data such as scores, and their lives came with fixed elements that did not change during the day.

3. Gaming for Everyone

Gaming wasn’t a lifestyle choice for the niche and uber-rich demographic, where there would be levels to what kind of gaming graphics one could afford. It was something to rejoice, enjoy, and celebrate for everyone. That’s why there was a low barrier to entry. People in rural and semi-urban India could easily play these Java-based games. This way, anyone could experience the digital play for the first time.

The Smartphone and 4G Revolution (2016-2020)

In the year 2016, something took hold of the world like nothing before. It was as if everyone in the world was possessed. Everyone was walking from one point to another, while looking at their phones the whole time. No, this wasn’t their usual addictive routine.

It was the effect of Pokémon Go. For a brief period, Pokémon Go became the biggest thing in the world, and it somewhat coincided with the launch of Jio by Reliance Industries Limited.

Jio brought about the 4G revolution in India, and that too at affordable prices. They also launched budget-friendly smartphones that truly democratized high-speed internet, which also enabled visual feedback. Everyone was playing Pokémon Go and using Jio 4G internet. It became the perfect plug-in advertisement and marketing stunt automatically.

These are some features that brought about that evolution:

1. Shift to App Stores

Android devices and iPhones started to see an all-time high in sales, which moved gaming into the casual apps era. While Pokémon Go is already mentioned, Angry Birds, Candy Crush, and Ludo King are the other notable mentions.

2. Interactive HUDs

UX Design was no longer about static displays. It started to move away from it and started showing dynamic health bars, mini maps, and inventory systems.

3. Localization

Gaming developers started to inculcate Indian culture into their content. Gaming content rooted in Indian mythology, religion, and history started popping up everywhere. This struck a chord with a massive domestic audience.

The Competitive and Midcore UX Era (2020 – Present)

The modern landscape is defined by “midcore” and “hardcore” gaming. Here, graphics are specifically designed to support fast-paced, high-stakes competition. Let’s look at the features that define the modern era of gaming culture:

1. Psychological UX

Data Analytics and Behavioural Science are the two major tools in modern-day to keep players engaged through personalized notifications. Social Integration and Intuitive Navigation are the other ways to drive player engagement.

2. Competitive UI

There are adaptive interfaces in professional gaming today that reduce on-screen clutter during intense combat. This allows for better tactical visibility.

3. High-Fidelity eSports

Games such as Battlegrounds Mobile India and Free Fire brought AAA-level graphics to mobile devices. This necessitated a UX that prioritizes low input delay and high frames per second (FPS).

Future Trends: AI and Immersion

By the end of 2026, the Indian gaming sector is expected to surpass $8 – $9 billion, driven by immersive technologies. These are some of the pointers to be expected in the future:

1. AI-Infused Gaming

AI is being used to create responsive character behavior and personalized storylines. This makes the UX more dynamic and character-specific.

2. AR/VR and Cloud Gaming

These technologies are expected to provide fully immersive 3D interfaces that would transform the gaming experience to a whole different level. It would react to gestures, reducing the need for expensive hardware through streaming.

3. Hybrid Casual Growth

This is an innovation that is emerging in the gaming world. In it, a new wave of “hybrid-casual” games combines the simple graphics of casual games with the complex progression systems of midcore titles.
